Medicine in Egypt: from final year to residency
The internship year(s), registering with the Syndicate, licensing, and the main residency and postgraduate routes.
Not yet reviewed. Drafted by the Credentia team and last checked 27 Sept 2026. It has not yet been reviewed by a qualified professional. Treat it as a map, not as advice, and confirm every step with the official bodies listed at the end.
1. Know which programme you are on
Egyptian medical faculties moved from the older six-year degree followed by one internship year to a five-year degree followed by two internship years, for students who entered from 2019 onwards. Which one applies to you decides how long your internship is and which licensing rules apply to you.
Your faculty's student affairs office can confirm which programme you are registered on.
2. The internship (الامتياز)
The internship is supervised clinical training in rotations across the main specialties. You work under supervision; you are not yet licensed to practise independently.
- Keep a record of every rotation: department, dates and supervising doctor. You will need it later, and Credentia's profile has a place for it.
- Use the internship to test specialties you are considering for residency.
- Observerships and research positions can add experience in a specialty your rotations did not cover.
3. Registration and licensing
After completing the internship, doctors register with the Egyptian Medical Syndicate and obtain a licence to practise from the Ministry of Health and Population. Graduates of the reformed programme are expected to pass a national licensing examination as part of this.
Requirements, documents and exam rules change. Confirm the current steps directly with the Syndicate and the Ministry before you rely on any summary, including this one.
4. Residency and postgraduate routes
- Ministry of Health residency: training posts in Ministry hospitals, allocated through the Ministry's national process.
- University hospital residency: posts in university hospitals, usually linked to a master's degree (MSc) and later a doctorate (MD).
- The Egyptian Fellowship: a structured specialty training programme with its own examinations.
- Regional and international routes (for example the Arab Board, or licensing exams abroad) each have their own eligibility rules; check them with the body concerned.
5. What to do this year
- Build your profile now — rotations, research and languages are hard to reconstruct later.
- Set an alert on Credentia for observerships and research positions in the specialties you are considering.
- Write down the documents each residency route asks for, and start collecting them early.
